Keep versions in a private gallery
Generated backgrounds and their settings stay in Gallery on the Mac. Filter results, reopen a promising image, reuse its prompt and seed, then export the version you want to use as a desktop picture.
A desktop wallpaper usually works better when it is quieter than a poster or illustration. Leave open areas for icons, the menu bar, and windows. If the scene has one main subject, ask for it to sit away from the part of the screen where you keep files and folders.
Think about how the image will look behind everyday work. Strong contrast, many small details, or bright text can make file names harder to read. Muted colors, soft focus in busy areas, and simple shapes often make a background easier to live with for several hours at a time.
The generated aspect ratio may match the screen without matching its exact pixel size. Export the image, crop it if needed, and let macOS fit it to the display. Keep the original generation in Gallery so you can return to the same prompt and make a darker, lighter, or less detailed version later.
